Patton Introduces World's First IP Camera Extender

Patton (News - Alert) Electronics has announced the Patton Model 1173, the world’s first IP Camera Extender. The announcement was made at IIPSEC 2008 in Coventry, UK earlier this week.

“The market trend is everything over Ethernet,” said Patton project manager Johnnie Grant. “Patton technology takes video-over-Ethernet faster and farther over voice-grade copper. The 1173 addresses an amazing breadth of applications.”

The Model 1173 is enclosed in metal and operates at temperatures of -10° to 70°C. It has the ability to support video deployment without infrastructure upgrades in a wide variety of scenarios including banks, retail outlets, railways, power plants, marine vessels and agricultural operations. Additional protection from condensing humidity is provided by optional conformal coating.

Patton’s newest product is compatible with any IP camera on the market, and can deliver high-quality streaming video over regular copper phone wire at speeds of up to 50 Mbps. Patton’s Model 1173 reduces infrastructure costs for video-over-Ethernet applications, and also simplifies installation by eliminating new CAT5 or co-axial cable requirements.

The 1173 can extend IP video at 4 Mbps up to 6000 feet—a distance fifteen times that of the Ethernet distance limitation. It is completely transparent to WMV, MPEG-4, and MJPEG compression schemes.

In locations where video surveillance is needed, the IP Camera extender can prolong the life of aging twisted-pair infrastructure. In locations with installed CAT5, the 1173 extends video far beyond the 328 foot limit, thereby enhancing the CAT5 network.
