Successful Management of Device Provisioning

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Management of device provisioning, the process of ensuring that IP network devices in homes and offices are properly “registered” with associated service providers, can be somewhat complex to successfully achieve. It need not be, though, and isn’t if the best solution is chosen.

A successful device positioning solution ensures reliable service with minimal complexity. Device positioning solutions should streamline the allocation and assignment of IP nodes and subnets associated with regional offices and customers. The solution should ensure integrity of IP administration and offer scalable deployment of units.

Address Commander, a device positioning solution from Incognito, streamlines IP address assignment and improve tracking of IP space and routing of network entries. It prevents premature address space depletion by implementing global allocation rules. Address Commander captures Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) network configurations and regional deployments.

When integrated with Incognito Broadband Command Center, DHCP discovery collects information and status on the IP addresses in use. Also, the Broadband Command Center allows users to automatically assign DHCP static addresses from one central interface in Address Commander and forward the assignments to any of the networked regions.

Incognito’s device positioning solution lets users manage IP space anytime anywhere. It allows them to access Web management console remotely and view configuration, entities, subnets, devices, DHCP services and reports based on various fields and user definable attributes (UDA).

The devise positioning solution generates reports that provide a holistic view of user devices. Users can track and report space utilization using these built-in reports that are customizable to capture information on the utilization and deployment of static, dynamic, and MAC-to-IP addresses. Regional Internet Registries (RIR) reports can be generated using a built-in ARIN or RIPE module to reconcile the receipt, allocation and usage of user’s space. The information is then relayed to appropriate WHOIS system via SWIP e-mail updates.

Address Commander, when integrated with Incognito Name Commander, allows direct auditing, diagnostics and configuration of related DNS information. It enables customers and business units to self provision domains and IP space and review their own network information. It allows seamless integration with operations support systems (OSS) for processes such as network inventory maintenance, static address provisioning, and network component configuration

The import tool that comes with Address Commander lets customers pull data into a centralized IP Address Management (IPAM) operation and migrate the address blocks and assignments, subnet groups, seed blocks, static addresses, and device or router information from disparate spreadsheets into a centralized database in Address Commander.

The device-positioning tool proactively audits user sessions by providing log for each user-initiated session giving all details and by assigning passwords, access control lists (ACL), and control of selected IP address blocks by administrator. Thus it ensures the integrity of IP administration.

The distributed implementation architecture allows the deployment of the required IPAM components simultaneously or incrementally, on one or multiple machines to distribute the management load. Optional services can also be deployed simultaneously or incrementally. The architecture supports both IPv4 and IPv6 address blocks.

The entire process results in more efficient use of IP space, reduced administration costs and a more effective distribution of address blocks.
