Dedicated Servers Enable Companies to Slash Costs and Save Millions

With success, Web hosting companies are seeing an escalation in data center costs and operating expenses. Hence, to stay competitive and grow, they must stay abreast of latest data center technologies and substantially reduce capital and operating costs.While server virtualization provides some relief, it is not the final answer. Hence, Hostway Corp., a cloud hosting company, took the virtual dedicated server route to curb server proliferation, reduce hardware and set-up costs, and improve availability.

Consequently, Hostway’s (News - Alert) enterprise services division deployed Windows Server 2008 R2 datacenter and Hyper-V as the foundation of its new virtual dedicated server (VDS), which features dedicated processors, RAM (News - Alert), enterprise storage, and operating system resources, as well as optional database and backup services.

“A key reason we went with Microsoft (News - Alert) was the totality of its solution, including tools like the Microsoft Dynamic Data Center Toolkit for Hosting. Microsoft brought together everything we needed in a cohesive package,” asserted Joe Young, senior Windows administrator at Hostway.

“The Hostway virtual dedicated server is a highly available virtual server solution that enables us to create, customize, and host servers on demand and manage them using System Center tools,” said Todd Benjamin (News - Alert), director of enterprise hosting at Hostway.

Besides attractive licensing advantages, being a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, for deploying large numbers of virtual machines, Hyper-V also supports both Windows and Linux, which is critical to a Web hosting company. Furthermore, the Windows Server 2008 R2 enables the IT staff to transparently move running virtual machines from one node of a failover cluster to another node in the same cluster, according to the Cloud hosting company.

“It’s great having a single hardware and virtualization environment that can support multiple operating system requirements,” noted Young. “It really simplifies our support work.”

In reality, with the new platform, Hostway plans to slash server deployment work by up to 1,000 hours a month and expects hardware and electrical costs to drop by nearly U.S. $2 million annually. Additionally, Hostway was able to get to the market sooner by 60 to 90 days with a cost-effective offering that boasts 100 percent uptime.
