Students from Israel and Iraq Engage in Videoconference Using LifeSize and Codian Technology

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

LifeSize, a manufacturer of conference phones and videoconferencing solutions, announced Thursday that its technology was chosen by the ISIME center at University of Denver to facilitate a peace summit between Israeli and Iraqi students.

The summit was conducted at the University of Denver’s campus August 9, in partnership with RJ Macklin Associates. The audio and video conferencing technology used to enable conversations between the students was manufactured by LifeSize and Codian (News - Alert), another provider of high-def video communication equipment.

This program was an initiative of the University of Denver’s Graduate School of International Studies in conjunction with its work to study Israel and its neighbors in the Middle East in terms of scholarly, cultural and economic aspects. The goal? To help facilitate peace in the region.

The summit was led by Shaul Gabbay, executive director professor at the school, and Barb Vogel, a human rights activist. Twenty-five students from Iraq visited campus and engaged in audiovisual dialog with Arab, Jewish, Christian and Muslim teenagers in Israel.

“The Institute for the Study of Israel in the Middle East (ISIME) is devoted to pursuing peace in the Middle East,” said Shaul Gabbay, professor and executive director of ISIME.

“Our ‘Building Bridges for Peace HD Videoconference’ allows us to bring teenagers together from Iraq and Israel for the first time in history,” Gabbay said in a statement. “We are thankful to RJ Macklin Associates for introducing us to LifeSize's and Codian’s HD technology, knowing that without it, this opportunity would not be possible.”

The students from Israel took part in the videoconference from the AVCOM facilities in Tel Aviv, where ISIME Israel director Shaul Amir moderated the discussion.

“We are honored that the University of Denver and ISIME selected LifeSize as their high definition video communications provider of choice for this historic event,” said Craig Malloy, CEO at LifeSize, in a statement. “Today’s event demonstrates that video communications is more than just a business application. It can be used as an enabler for bringing people of different countries and cultures closer together in a meaningful way.”
