Nortel’s (News - Alert) Carrier VoIP and Application Solutions division unveiled the latest enhancements of its state-of-the art Communication Server 2000 carrier IP softswitch at the SuperComm (News - Alert) 2009 trade show last week. The Communication Server 2000, also known as CS 2000, is a VoIP super-class softswitch on the XA-Core Platform operating in an open standards Nortel VoIP network.
The newly enhanced CS 2000a hardware platform amplifies a service providers’ capacity in a smaller footprint, provides up to a 70 percent reduction in footprint and a 50 percent power savings compared to currently available platform options.
With its ability to support call capacity in excess of 5 million “busy call hour attempts,” the CS 2000a can help service providers to manage peak call periods more efficiently. The platform makes use of Nortel’s carrier grade ATCA-based hardware platform joined with its middleware platform, the “Versatile Service Engine.”
Nortel has also unveiled the CVM release 14 software which is capable of unveiling a range of advanced SIP applications that unify the communications experience for subscribers. Those apps include a hosted call center feature for SIP terminals/clients; SIP mobile UC clients for easier end-user migration to SIP; extension of multimedia capabilities to subscribers behind SIP business trunks; support of DECT (News - Alert) SIP terminals for residential services; remote provisioning of SIP terminals for faster deployments; and other OAM features to help carriers reduce costs.
Nortel has stated that service providers’ dependence on its CVAS solutions and these latest enhancements are proof of their continued investment to equip service providers with the means to improve network efficiencies, revenue potential and subscriber loyalty. With these new CS 2000 hardware and software enhancements Nortel is taking a quantum leap in the global carrier VoIP and softswitch market and these enhancements mark also their commitment to give service providers more network capacity, scalability and the power to deliver advanced SIP applications to subscribers.
