FCC Votes 'Yes' for 988 Texting to National Suicide Prevention Hotline

Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in our nation - especially for those in the age group of 10-34 years old. This startling statistic is further exasperated by the increase in suicides we’ve witnessed in 2020 alone as mental health issues increased during the pandemic.


The National Suicide Prevention Hotline was established as a free hotline so that anyone in the U.S. can call to receive mental health support from a crisis counselor during a critical time in hopes of saving innocent lives.

This important public health service is provided for all but has a particular focus on disadvantaged communities where there has historically been high suicide risks and fewer resources for help.

In addition to a live call center with counselors, there is also an online chat option via Lifeline which connects individuals with counselors for emotional support and other services via web chat.

Now, starting next year, a text messaging option will also be available to the number 988.

The FCC (News - Alert) voted unanimously to approve the use of this # so that anyone in the U.S. can be in communication with a crisis counselor. Once the line is live (the deadline for text providers to comply is July 16, 2022) users who text 988 will be entered into a text-based communication session with a crisis counselor.

Not only is text messaging a leading form of communication today - especially in teens and younger generations - but it is also a safe option for those who may be in a situation where discreet help is needed, such as a domestic violence situation ,or LBGTQ individuals living in a unsupportive household. It also provides more options for those with unique disabilities.
