Business Phone System Follow-me and Hunt Groups Help Small Businesses Succeed

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Here’s the scenario: John Smith runs his own small company. You could call him a ‘road warrior’ because he is always on the move—driving to and from meetings with customers, popping in and out of his home office, jumping on a plane to meet with potential clients on the other side of the country. Because of the nature of his business, he can’t afford to miss any phone calls, which is a challenge considering he changes location frequently.

The solution to that challenge for John Smith is to buy a VoIP service that lets him take his phone with him when he travels. The phone is coded with his account information, so all he has to do is plug it into a Internet connection and he’s up and running. This means customers can all him at a single number, and it reaches him no matter where he is.

This business phone system feature is usually referred to as “follow-me” because the phone follows you wherever you go. Customers can call John Smith at his business number, but the call reaches him wherever the phone is located—home, office, hotel room, etc.

Adding another layer of flexibility to this scenario is John Smith’s use of hunt groups to help customers find him if he happens to actually be away from his VoIP phone when they call (not unlikely, considering the fact that he spends as little time in his hotel room while traveling as he does in his home office).

A hunt group is a business phone system feature that enables automatic distribution of incoming calls to one or more phone numbers. Hunt groups, sometimes also called call treatments, let John Smith customize what happens when a customer calls his business number. In his case, he sets the business phone system so that the office phone rings five times; if he doesn’t pick up on the fifth ring, the call is forwarded to his cell.

Both of these features let John Smith do business transparently from any location. For a small business owner, such functionality is vital to success. Today’s business phone systems deliver such features and lots of other ones too. To learn more, please visit  the Nuvio (News - Alert)-sponsored TMCnet.com channel Business Phone System.
