According to Gartner (News - Alert), there will be 1.2 billion new iPhones, iPads, Androids, Windows 8 and BlackBerry devices purchased globally by the end of the year. The influx of devices purchased also leads to more devices brought into the workplace. In fact, a recent study found that 62 percent of companies will allow bring your own device (BYOD) by the end of 2013.
The mobile device landscape changes constantly with new innovations in tablets, hybrid devices and smartphones. Constant media coverage of consumer technology rivaling or surpassing the capabilities of enterprise hardware and software is causing many employees to believe they, not IT, can identify the best tools for their jobs.
Choosing one device for both personal and professional use increases employee satisfaction as well as efficiency and productivity. An iPass (News - Alert) survey of 1,100 mobile workers found employees who use mobile devices for both work and personal use put in 240 more hours per year than those who do not.
According to an internal review of Intel’s (News - Alert) own BYOD program, the trend creates a huge boost in employee productivity. In 2011, the 17,000 Intel employees bringing personal devices to work reported an average productivity increase of 57 minutes per day.
So, as it seems that the move to a completely BYOD-enabled workplace is inevitable in upcoming years, what is your company going to do to embrace the trend and secure your environment?
