NewTek Introduces High Quality Skype with TalkShow VS-100

By David Delony, Contributing Writer

The act of video and call monitoring just got a bit more creative—and contact centers should take note. NewTek (News - Alert), a company that revolutionized the video industry with the Video Toaster, seems to be on track to do the same thing with its new TalkShow VS-100 system. It uses Skype (News - Alert) TX to allow TV studios and live video producers to take Skype calls and add them to live video feeds in broadcast-level quality.

“TalkShow and Skype TX allow producers to fundamentally change the way shows are made by taking audience participation to a whole new level,” Andrew Cross, president and chief technology officer at NewTek, said. “Newsrooms with immediate access to experts the world over, fans interacting live with their favorite sports teams, game shows with live video participants, corporate meetings with live executives from remote offices, guest professors from across the globe appearing in classrooms – the potential is beyond the imagination and I personally can’t wait to see it.”

While news broadcasts have been able to take video calls before, they’ve tended to be slow, blocky affairs. Satellite links are also expensive and are difficult to make. Skype, on the other hand, uses the Internet for more robust connections and is free to use in most cases, and many guests probably have it installed on their computers already. Operators can talk to the person in the call, as well as monitor call quality in real time, and producers can record calls for later access.

Other system features include automatic video aspect ratio and quality adjustment, color correction and the ability to fail over to a still image in case of video quality problems. It’s also possible to route signals into a video switcher using SDI, including NewTek’s own TriCaster.

The combined hardware and software solution comes with a number of pro audio tools, up to four audio outputs and support for audio over IP.
