Kontron's 10 Embedded Platforms Integrates Newest Intel Core Processor

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Kontron will now support the launch of the second generation Intel (News - Alert) Core processor with CPU, processor graphics, memory controller (some with ECC support) and PCIe controller on a single die on more than 10 embedded platforms.

Kontron (News - Alert) COM Express basic ETXexpress -- SC Computer-on-Module offers Kontron’s value-added middleware and market-specific I/Os via FPGA. The company also plans to release a mini-ITX, Flex-ATX embedded motherboard and 6U CompactPCI blade in the first part of 2011. This will allow the users to take advantage of the new processors’ high-level of integration, including the memory controller (some with ECC support) and processor graphics.

“With our new COM Express Module ETXexpress-SC and all other upcoming platforms, customers are able to create very energy-efficient high-performance applications directly with the availability of this new processor generation," said Dirk Finstel, CTO at Kontron. "On top of this, we support them with our cross platform middleware, Kontron EAPI (Kontron Embedded Application Programming Interface), that offers a highly efficient I/O access and application migration to reduce engineers R&D efforts.”

To accelerate scalar-based operations required for imaging applications in industrial automation, medical and military, Kontron’s platforms based on second generation Intel Core processors will also incorporate Intel Advanced Vector Extensions (Intel AVX (News - Alert)). Intel AVX also accelerates intensive floating-point applications, such as high-performance embedded computing (HPEC). Also, tailoring a workload to give users an immediate performance boost whenever possible based on thermal headroom. Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0 automatically shifts or reallocates processor cores and processor graphics resources.

Recently, the company released its AdvancedMC (News - Alert) (AMC) packet processor module based on the Cavium Networks Octeon II CN6335 MIPS64 6-core processor. The new AMC module offers increased functionality and exceptional performance for any number of 4G applications. It is also a cost-effective solution that is in line with the COTS ecosystem business model for ATCA, MicroTCA (News - Alert) and other implementations taking advantage of AMCs.
