EUTEL Deploys MetaSwitch for VoIP Network in Netherlands Antilles

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

Carrier IP communications solutions player MetaSwitch is now providing its carrier Voice over IP (VoIP) solution as a replacement to existing legacy TDM switching infrastructure used by the Netherlands Antilles’ primary telecommunications service provider.

EUTEL, the Dutch island chain’s incumbent telecommunications service provider, has deployed the MetaSwitch solutions making it the first service provider in the Eastern Caribbean to adopt an IMS-ready architecture.

"We chose MetaSwitch (News - Alert) because of the company's experience and global market leadership," said Gerald Berkel, managing director of EUTEL N.V. "By partnering with MetaSwitch, we are reaffirming our commitment to offer the latest in telecommunications services to our subscribers.”

Alameda, Calif.-based MetaSwitch creates switching and applications solutions for both packet and circuit-switched networks. Its MetaSphere service delivery platform and applications suite enables a broad set of hosted IP communications services, while its core session control and media/signaling gateway products support a full range of Class 4/5 softswitch capabilities.

In an effort t to reduce operating expenses as well as provide a higher level communications services to all subscribers, EUTEL opted for the MetaSwitch VP2510 Integrated Softswitch – a combination of all its core IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) functions in one deployed system, according to Berkel.

“As the first operator with an IMS-ready network in the Eastern Caribbean, EUTEL and the island are positioned well for the future,” said Berkel.

The small footprint and reduced power and cooling requirements of the new MetaSwitch solution are expected to mean significant savings to the bottom line in the tropical climate of St. Eustatius.

MetaSwitch is replacing EUTEL's legacy Nortel (News - Alert) DMS switch and, in addition, the MetaSphere Enhanced Applications Server will enable EUTEL to offer Hosted IP PBX to business customers, along with enhanced services such as CommPortal for Web 2.0 communications tools, according to René Méndez, vice president of sales for the Caribbean and Latin America.

"EUTEL really wants to bring the latest services to the island, and we are excited to be part of their vision," said Méndez. "This deployment demonstrates that MetaSwitch's core values -- quality engineering, exceptional customer support, reliability and innovation -- are resonating with carriers across all geographic regions."

Additional enhanced services include a Web portal as well as widgets for access to voice messages, call and contact management.

"MetaSwitch installed the equipment exactly as planned and on our schedule," said Berkel. "We were very pleased that the equipment was shipped promptly, installed quickly and turned up per our expectations."
