Advanced Carrier Services Provider Metaswitch Purchases Colibria in Order to Provide Advanced Messaging Services

By Jamie Epstein, TMCnet Web Editor

Metaswitch, a provider of next generation infrastructure and advanced carrier services to network operators, today announced the acquisition of Colibria (News - Alert), which is a provider of enhanced instant messaging, presence and network address book solutions.

Colibria's all-IP services are used by operators around the globe in order to offer users advanced messaging, as well as content sharing capabilities. These services were created to enhance the communication needs of a broad spectrum to both business and consumer users.

The Colibria acquisition further helps to excel Metaswitch's recently released Thrutu service, which is the first in-call content sharing experience that allows for mobile users to spontaneously exchange information during a call. Currently available as a platform for global operators, Thrutu helps operators introduce these new services.

The addition of Colibria's IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS) and Rich Communication Suite (RCS and RCS-e) portfolio gives Metaswitch the ability to offer operators a chance to overcome the competition, while ensuring that the voice call remains an important element in communciation.

"Operators around the world have quickly come to realize that it is time to turn up the heat on their over-the-top competitors," said Kevin DeNuccio (News - Alert), CEO at Metaswitch. "The way people communicate is quickly evolving from just voice and text to a new, richer set of social interaction and contextual calling services. Metaswitch is in the middle of this transformation, helping service providers address these demands and putting their brand front and center in the new communications experience. Colibria technology will play a key role in making this happen."

"We are thrilled that Colibria has been acquired by Metaswitch," said Lars Myhrum, Colibria CEO. "The companies share a common culture of engineering excellence and customer-first thinking. Colibria has been in the forefront of messaging and rich communication services, exemplifying Norwegian companies' ability to innovate and succeed alongside major international companies. Metaswitch will now allow us to write the next chapter in that story."

Metaswitch will continue to invest in and maintain full support of Colibria's brand, products and industry partnerships.

In related news, TMCnet reported that Synchronica (News - Alert), a provider of next-generation mobile messaging services, signed an agreement to acquire Colibria's IMPS Instant Messaging business, reseller agreements and existing worldwide mobile operator customer base.
