Jump for joy, you can now buy a laptop that has a multi-touch screen! Hewlett Packard has introduced today the company's first notebook computer with multi-touch technology. The notebook will have the same fingertip navigation built into previous HP desktops and that have been popularized by Apple's ( News - Alert) iPhone.
Hewlett Packard said the new laptop will offer the option of setting aside a keyboard and a mouse in favor of hand motions such as pinch, rotate, drag and double tap.
"HP is providing users an easier, more natural way to interact with their PCs," Ted Clark, manager of HP's notebook group, said in a statement.
The new touch notebook, called the TouchSmart tx2, will have three modes, the company said: PC, display and tablet, with a digital pen to sketch or take notes directly on the screen.
MTV Networks ( News - Alert) and HP have expanded their partnership and the music network will provide ten streaming television channels, including Nickelodeon and Spike TV starting in December.
The company's previous TouchSmart machines have been aimed at integrating computers into the home, designed to serve as a kind of family bulletin board, a television and a place to check e-mail in one place, reported The Associated Press.
HP said the new laptop will be available for order online today starting at $1,149.
According to HP’s Website, the power of touch will allow users to put their digital lifestyles at their fingertips with these cool features:
- A multi-touch display with gestures (sets of finger movements that can be understood by the PC) optimized for HP MediaSmart
- The ability to touch your way through your PC to enjoy photos, music, movies, and more
- The ability to take notes on a tablet with the included digital pen—your notes are automatically converted into typed text
- Simplified password management via integrated fingerprint reader (optional)
- An optional stand for mounting the notebook upright, so it's easier to touch (vs. when it's flat)
With the introduction of the notebook, HP has offered investors a rare spot in the technology sector, projecting better-than-expected earnings for the quarter that ended in October, sending its stock soaring Tuesday.
