By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alienware announced that it is including two powerful ATI mobility Radeon HD 3800 series processors from AMD in its Alienware M17 notebook PC. The Alienware M17 will be using the powerful AMD’s (News - Alert) ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology with Microsoft Direct X 10.1 support.

ATI Radeon HD 3800 series graphics processors offer twice the processing performance per watt than older AMD GPUs. Key features include ultimate Microsoft (News - Alert) DirectX 10.1 performance providing life-like graphics with 3D graphics and shading effects. The notebook offers over 1 teraFLOP of computing power to take care of demanding graphics applications. The ATI CrossFireX technology also allows optimum 3D performance. The unified video recorder enables viewing Blu-ray and HD DVD content with a dedicated video decoder which leaves the CPU free for other tasks.

Patrick Cooper, director of product planning at Alienware said that the M17, with all the capabilities of ATI CrossFireX multi-GPU technology, provides optimum performance at a nominal price considering its capability. Its chassis design and the realism that the scalable ATI graphics solution provides will surely impress mobile gamers.

“As a strong indicator of AMD visual computing leadership, Alienware has chosen AMD’s amazing graphics technology for their M17 notebook to provide gamers with truly exciting gameplay experiences,” said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager of AMD’s graphics products group, in a statement.

Bergman continued: “The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series offers support for the latest Microsoft DirectX 10.1 games with incredible levels of performance. When two ATI Mobility Radeon™ 3800 series graphics processor units (GPUs) are combined using AMD’s ATI CrossFireX technology, the result is blistering speed and an astonishing gaming experience for gamers on the go.”

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series graphics offers powerful HD computing features. Notebook users will be able to enjoy a HD gaming experience owing to the support for Microsoft DirectX 10.1. This offers life like realism, enhanced lighting effects and optimum performance seen in games like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky from GSC and BattleForge from Phenomic.

The ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3800 series is capable of supporting Blu-ray and high-definition video, working with AMD’s Unified Video Decoder for maintaining smooth HD media playback with sharp images and bright colors. A Blu-ray drive and HD notebook panel are required for HD Blu-ray playback.
