By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics today launched the latest Samsung smartphone I7110 based on S60 and Symbian OS. The new Samsung smartphone comes with advanced connectivity features such as high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) and Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi). The “slim and sleek smartphones” are bar-shaped and only 12.9 mm thick.

I7110 is based on Symbian (News - Alert) OS v9.3 and it is optimized for convergence with performance and feature enhancements, offering high levels of efficiency and platform security, the company said. Users can choose from thousands of applications from the S60 applications library and have access to programs.

Symbian licenses Symbian OS software to handset manufacturers and has been associated with leading companies across the mobile industry. According to the company, about 206 million Symbian mobile phones have been shipped since the 31st of March, 2008.

“The introduction of I7110, Samsung’s latest Symbian OS-based smartphone, is a testament to our strategic focus on the open OS phone portfolio,” said Geesung Choi, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business, in a statement. Choi further added that the partnership with Symbian and the company’s growing interest in the smarphone market would result in a wide selection of mobile phones meeting the lifestyle demands of today’s customers.

The new I7110 has been optimized for multimedia applications. With its 2.6” Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) screen, the phone is capable of providing advanced navigation, multimedia and connectivity.

Samsung I7110 features a 5-megapixel camera with auto focus and light emitting diode (LED) flash as well as advanced video recording and play features. A highly useful feature of the phone, the support for multi-codec formats including DivX, allows easy video file conversion.

“The I7110’s stylish design and advanced functionality combines the very best of easy-to-use mobile information and entertainment services with the highest level of power efficiency and reliability from Symbian OS,” said Nigel Clifford, chief executive officer, Symbian, in a statement.

Samsung I7110 is being showcased at the Symbian Smartphone Show in London, October 21-22nd. The phone will be available in selected markets next month.
