By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

ZTE (News - Alert), provider of telecom equipment and network solutions, has announced the U990 device, the world's first high-end high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) time division synchronous code division multiple access (TD-SCDMA) mobile handset.

The launch of the new high-end handset is in line with the company’s third-generation (3G) strategies to strengthen its presence globally. ZTE has also unveiled its strategic plan in expanding to the 3G high-end markets. The Chinese major has entered into partnerships with top 10 3G telecom operators.

The tie-up with 3G players is a result of its efforts to build special thrust in major telecom markets such as Europe, North America and Japan. ZTE has also played a significant role in offering advanced telecom services by obtaining 30 percent of the bid in the previous two TD-SCDMA terminal tenders in China, its home market.

“We are proud to be the first company in the industry to offer HSPDA mobile handset with TD-SCDMA intelligence; it is truly another significant achievement for our handset business. Our technology know-how and excellent product offering reaffirm our leading position in the mobile handset area,” said He Shiyou, executive vice president of ZTE, in a statement. “We are introducing this home-grown technology to the worldwide market to provide end users with the best mobile experience.”

The world's first high-end HSDPA TD-SCDMA mobile handset, U990, is ZTE's third high-end TD-SCDMA mobile handset model and will soon be available in the market. The two other previous models were U980 and U981. Launch of U990 phone marked the sale of 100 million handsets by ZTE.

U990 has a high-speed transmission rate of up to 2.8 Mbps, the fastest transmission speed among the TD-SCDMA terminals available in the industry. The new model supports dual mode TD-SCDMA/ Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE), allowing seamless transitions between the two networks.

The U990 handset runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system. It is the first ZTE handset integrated with a Microsoft (News - Alert) OS. It adopts advanced touch-screen technology and is equipped with both Global Positioning System (GPS)/ Advanced Global Positioning System (AGPS) navigation technologies.

U990’s HSDPA speed is capable of reaching 2.8Mbps for downlink transmission and 384kbps for uplink transmission, ensuring high-speed HSDPA service under TD-SCDMA network infrastructure in China.
