In-Stat Finds Bluetooth in Maturation Period

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

It seems as though the world may be completely “plugged in” to Bluetooth technology, or at least, there are not as many new users as there have been in the past. According to In-Stat (News - Alert), the technology seems to have reached a maturation period with growth rates – although still strong – that do not match that of the recent past.

In-Stat was also quick to note that the Bluetooth chip market should benefit as new standards, such as low-energy and high-speed Bluetooth, are expected to be introduced into devices beginning in late 2009, and in volumes beginning in 2010.

"These new silicon products will spur additional growth in Bluetooth-enabled product shipments, and High-speed Bluetooth ASPs (average selling prices) will help to keep revenues strong as other Bluetooth ASPs continue to decline," says Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat analyst, in a Tuesday statement. "Current market growth for Bluetooth devices is primarily attributed to sales growth in mobile phones, which is the top market for Bluetooth silicon shipments."

In its recent research, In-Stat also found that the growth of Bluetooth-enabled device shipments will increase by 26 percent in 2008; silicon manufacturers are continuing to roll out integrated radio chips with Bluetooth, WiFi (News - Alert), GPS and FM; and sales of mono headsets will continue to grow, driven by increased regulations surrounding mobile phone usage while driving.

Bluetooth technology still plays a significant role in the industry, particularly in the mobile industry as regulations are intensifying; demanding increased hands-free usage of headsets. This change will also impact the demand for mobile devices that are Bluetooth compatible. While it is unlikely that we will see a decrease in growth any time soon, maturation is not uncommon in this fast-paced industry.

”Bluetooth 2008: New Standards Signify an Increasingly Complex Market” covers the worldwide market for Bluetooth and Bluetooth silicon. The report provides unit shipment and revenue forecasts for Bluetooth-enabled products by category and Bluetooth semiconductors through 2012.

The research also provides domestic and international results from In-Stat's 2008 Residential Technology Survey regarding Bluetooth recognition among consumers. Analysis of Bluetooth standards and trends it provided.

This latest research report is part of In-Stat’s Multimedia and Interface Technologies service which focuses on identifying and forecasting markets for key interface technologies while it also tracks penetration of these technologies into PCs, PC peripherals, consumer electronics and communications applications.
