Samsung Unveils New Smartphone, Omnia

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributing Editor

The Korean technology group, Samsung (News - Alert) Electronics, has just launched a new touchscreen smartphone, OMNIA.

This latest Samsung OMNIA will be unveiled at CommunicAsia (News - Alert), in Singapore from June 17 - 20, 2008, and will be commercially launched in the Southeast Asian market during the same time.

The launch has perfectly positioned Samsung to challenge the new version of Apple’s iPhone (News - Alert), the 3G iPhone which has also recently entered the market.

As mentioned to PHONE Magazine (News - Alert), Geesung Choi, president of Samsung Telecommunication Business, said “I am very excited to introduce Samsung, a mobile device that truly delivers the best possible features for today’s busy, connected consumer. Samsung demonstrates our vision for the Samsung mobile business, which is to provide premium phones for users who desire functionality, style, usability and entertainment in one innovative device. The mobile range will help users to be at the forefront of work and play and at the same time, to stay connected anytime, anywhere.”

Omnia comes with a wide 3.2-inch display with 240 pixels by 400 pixel resolution. The phone will operate on both WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) and will also support 7.2M bps (bits per second) HSDPA (High-speed Downlink Packet Access) and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) data networking.

With enhanced music capabilities and a 5 mega pixel camera, the phone runs on Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows Mobile software. Other features include GPS (Global Positioning System), Bluetooth and FM radio.

According to the information provided by Samsung, the Omnia resembles the original iPhone in its dark, shiny finish, curved edges and slim form.
