Windows XP Home Now Available for ULCPCs

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The new age of computing is all about style and speed. Today, there are PCs that can give corporate computers a run their money and laptops that are getting thinner and more powerful everyday.

There is also another class of computers which are quietly making their impact, ultra-low-cost PCs (ULCPCs) and they have made even Microsoft (News - Alert) sit up and take notice.

Recently, Microsoft announced the worldwide extension of the availability of Windows XP Home for ULCPCs. The company says that it is acting on the demands from its friends and customers, who wanted Microsoft OS to be available on these computers.
ULCPCs attract many types of customers such as those who cannot afford high-end PCs, first time customers who do not want and do not know what to do with the high-end PCs, and those customers looking for back-up for their big computers.
Microsoft has said it is extending direct OEM sales of Windows XP Home for ULCPCs so that the users can pre-install Windows on these devices until June 30, 2010, or one year after the general availability of the next version of the Windows operating system. Microsoft also said it is publishing formal design guidelines on the Web to enable manufacturers to build Windows-based, flash-based machines with even greater hardware limitations.
