iPhone Rival Touch Sold Half as Many Handsets

By Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor

High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC), the Taiwan based smartphone maker, has reportedly sold 2 million of the Microsoft (News - Alert)-based mobile phones it developed to compete with the iPhone last year, the Touch family of handsets.

HTC Touch made its debut last year in June, a few weeks ahead of the iPhone (News - Alert). The HTC Touch uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 software and has a touch screen that takes up most of its face, similar to the iPhone.

HTC (News - Alert) officials said that the company sold 11.8 million handsets overall last year, which is around 12 percent increase over 2006.

At last week’s Macworld Expo in San Francisco Apple CEO Steve Jobs (News - Alert) said his company had sold 4 million iPhones since launch.

According to media reports, strong sales of the handset helped HTC's revenue grow nearly 12 percent last year as well, and the company already sees good prospects for the first quarter of this year.

Some of the global economic issues that have hurt stock markets, including subprime mortgages and fears of recession in the U.S. have no impacted HTC so far in the first quarter.

“The first quarter looks good, it will be a lot better than our first quarter last year,” Peter Chou, president and CEO at HTC, told reporters. “We've seen no impact from global economic turmoil. We feel pretty good about this quarter.”

Earlier this month, HTC announced that revenues for December 2007 totaled NT$11,379 million. Total revenues of the fiscal year 2007 reached NT$118,592 million with 11.73 percent year-on-year growth.

Net incomes before tax were NT$32,180 million, self-assessed net incomes after tax were NT$28,926 million, self-assessed EPS before tax was NT$56.11 and self-assessed EPS after tax was NT$50.44.
