Fulcrum Biometrics Debuts FbF Palm Vein Developer Bundle

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Fulcrum Biometrics, a provider, distributor and integrator of biometric systems and devices, will begin providing Fujitsu (News - Alert) PalmSecure palm vein sensors along with FbF Palm Vein bioServer and developer tools.

Ken Nosker, president of Fulcrum Biometrics said, “The new, smaller PalmSecure sensors from Fujitsu enable cutting-edge palm vein technology to be used in a much broader array of biometric applications. But integrating new technologies can often be a complex, expensive and time-consuming proposition.”

Palm vein authentication technology is highly accurate and has a false acceptance rate (FAR) of just 0.00008 percent or lower and a false rejection rate (FRR) of 0.01 percent according to Fujitsu research which studied 140,000 palms. Authentication can be completed within a second.

According to officials the new FbF Palm Vein system facilitates the easy development and deploying of biometric solutions in identification projects that are based on palm vein technology. The FbF Palm Vein developer bundle suite includes the Fujitsu PalmSecure sensor, FbF Palm Vein bioServer, FbF Listener, and FbF Biometric Controls.

Palm vein imaging technology is the latest technology to be leveraged in biometric identification as it is very accurate, does not require touch contact and is not easy to forge. Palm vein technology is used in applications that need high security and contactless identification as in the case of banking applications, hospitals, clinics and in schools. In public places, where hygiene is particularly important, palm vein technology is used.

The equipment used here is a palm vein sensor which uses near-infrared light to read the unique vascular patterns in the palm of the hand which is captured as biometric identification data. This can be matched with previously recorded patterns for verification.

As the vein pattern is based on blood flowing through the veins, forgery is virtually impossible. Since veins are within the body their patterns cannot be altered and also as the palm does not change colors and is not easily damaged like fingertips they can be used for biometric identification for a long time, explained officials.

Besides being useful for healthcare, financial, commercial and educational facilities, the FbF palm vein developer bundle is used in physical access control, logical access control, and in retail POS systems, ATMs, kiosks, time and attendance management systems and visitor ID management.

In February 2013, Fulcrum (News - Alert) Biometrics collaborated with IriTech to sell its IriShield iris recognition scanner systems online. IriTech’s compact and low-cost systems will simplify the implementation of biometric iris recognition technology, in a range of applications such as mobile banking systems and voter registration.
