By Meenakshi Shankar, TMCnet Contributing Editor

According to an online news report, Sprint (News - Alert) Nextel Corp and Clearwire Corp have announced to create a national WiMax network for cell phones. The partnership will enable the subscribers to juggle between their networks.

To build a nationwide WiMax network and with their expertise in both fixed and mobile wireless broadband, Sprint and Clearwire have entered into a deal which will be finalized once the government approves the transaction. The deal would not only help the company attract more customers but also would reduce costs for both the companies. With no doubts, the deal will favor faster deployment of next generation technology.

Through this transaction, Sprint and Clearwire is expecting to offer WiMax services to about 100 million people by the end of 2008. The companies also plan to exchange wireless spectrum licenses and share broadcast towers, handle distribution and branding together as they both build out their respective networks. Sprint expects to reach about 185 million people, while Clearwire is focusing on covering about 115 million people.

WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is an emerging wireless broadband technology that delivers high speed broadband connections over a long distance. WiMax is finding its way into mobile aps, operators are looking out for a way to bring in this network and offer a cost effective wireless data service to their customers.

With around 55 million subscribers, Sprint Nextel Corp is one of the largest telecommunication companies in the world offering the most committed wireless service in the United States. The company is also the largest wireless broadband network operator and is the third largest long distance provider.

The initial stage of the project is likely to start by the end of 2007 and both companies predict to launch commercial service in the first half of 2008.
