Digital TVs, Blu-Ray Players and Portable Media Players Adopt WiFi: Report

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

A new report from In-Stat (News - Alert) reveals that WiFi is becoming an inevitable feature across a range of devices as the network connectivity migrates into the living room.

In terms of total volume and growth, digital televisions, Blu-ray players and portable media players are among the top categories. Shipments of WiFi (News - Alert)-enabled digital televisions will grow from under 5 million units in 2009 to more than 60 million units in 2014. Across all stationary consumer electronics such as set top boxes, game consoles, Blu-ray players, and digital picture frames, WiFi-enabled devices will surpass 200 million units by 2014.

“WiFi swept through the computing market, driven by the need to access and share broadband connectivity,” said Frank Dickson, vice president of research, In-Stat. “That same consumer desire is now resulting in the WiFi adoption across the entire range of connected consumer electronics, driving significant WiFi volumes. The ubiquitous adoption of WiFi in consumer electronics is WiFi’s manifest destiny.”

The report from In-Stat says that the mobile handsets will remain the highest volume Wi-Fi enabled device all through the forecast period. Also, the internet tablets with Wi-Fi which include Apple’s (News - Alert) iPad will grow to almost 50 million unit shipments by 2014.

In addition to this, the Total Available Market (TAM) of the Wi-Fi devices will exceed 3 billion unit shipments by 2013.

In-Stat’s recent report named ‘Wi-Fi in Consumer Electronics: New Devices Discover Wi-Fi’ covers the global market for CE devices with Wi-Fi. It provides five-year forecast for Wi-Fi CE devices. Also, it offers CE device shipments and Wi-Fi attach rates segmented for gaming consoles, digital TVs, Set-Top Boxes, Personal Video Recorders, VD Players, media adapters, printers, multifunction peripherals, handheld games, Portable Media Players, digital cameras, digital video cameras, Personal Digital Assistants, mobile PCs, portable CE devices, cellular handsets, WLAN Routers, residential Gateways, standalone access points, and external clients.
