Motorola Launches New Dual Core Advanced Mezzanine Card

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Motorola (News - Alert) Inc. has introduced an Advanced Mezzanine Card (AMC) that has a volume price less than $2,000 and offers two times as much processing capability as the preceding modules.

A full-sized AMC, the PrAMC-7210 is based on the Intel (News - Alert) Core 2 Duo processor core and Intel 3100 server-class chipset. Its 4GB double data rate (DDR2) SDRAM with error checking and correcting (ECC) capability at 400 MHz and on-board flash disk ensure supreme performance in addition to reliable operation and storage.

The x8 lane PCI Express link assists auto-negotiation to lower lane-widths and port bifurcation. The two Gigabit Ethernet links enable developers to interface to a wide array of high performance modules with these standard interfaces, as per application requirements. High-speed serial communication with hard disks for flexible storage configurations is achieved through two SATA links.

The PrAMC-7210 ensures the best price/performance ratio for numerous demanding, low-power embedded telecom applications. It also targets markets like network-centric warfare, digital security surveillance, medical imaging and industrial automation.

The Pr AMC-7210 is a cost-effective plug-in solution for MicroTCA and AdvancedTCA (News - Alert) systems. It has already been verified in Motorola's Centellis 1000 series MicroTCA communications server. Mid-size versions more suited to ATCA environment are also available as the PrAMC-7211.

“By using the latest Intel dual core processor on our new AMC and pricing it aggressively, we are showing our commitment to drive down the costs of MicroTCA (News - Alert) technology,” said Paul Virgo, director of MicroTCA marketing, Embedded Communications Computing, Motorola. “Delivering MicroTCA technology at an affordable price point will help attract new customers and spur market growth.”

The first PrAMC-7210 modules are expected to hit the market in the third quarter of 2007 and will be priced at less than $2,000 (USD) for volume orders. The PrAMC-7210 and 7211 will be available with Monta Vista Carrier Grade Linux or Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition as per application requirements.
