NeoMedia aims to develop an open and interoperable 2D barcoding ecosystem for creating opportunities for all participants, including brands, advertising agencies and mobile operators.
The licensing of NeoMedia’s technology is expected to foster innovation and competition resulting in new applications and services. The company hopes this activity will give a boost to mobile barcoding popularity and help it become an integral part of consumers’ daily lives.
This reportedly is the first contract to be announced under NeoMedia’s licensing program and it will enable Mobile Tag to engage consumer brands, advertising agencies, mobile operators and the OEMs that supply them with NeoMedia’s officially licensed U.S. patents.
Iain McCready, CEO of NeoMedia noted that this contract is a critical milestone for the industry and indicates that the market realizes the significance of creating a legitimate, licensed and open environment for all.
McCready also believes this deal will facilitate the rapid commercialization of mobile barcodes in the U.S.
William J. Hoffman (

Alert), CEO of Mobile Tag said that this license with NeoMedia will lead to innovation and adaptation of this technology. He expects this increase to be similar to that of SMS services earlier in this decade.
Mobile machine readable codes are already mainstream in Japan, France and Poland where they are present on around 210 million phones. Hoffman believes these will soon become mainstream in the U.S. and the time is right to make it happen.
“Mobile Tag focuses on delivery of carrier-grade client software and transaction infrastructure. While insuring brands, businesses and consumers who use that technology are pleased with the experience.”
