Shipments of 802.11n Will Soar in Wi-Fi Chipset Market in 2010

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

According to a recent report released by In-Stat, shipments of Wi-Fi Chipsets based on the draft n/802.11n will surpass those based on 802.11g in 2010. This will be mainly because of the increase in the shipments of mobile handsets and notebook PCs, In-Stat (News - Alert) said.

IEEE 802.11 is a set of standards, which allow for communication of wireless local area network computer communication in the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency bands. IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11g extends throughput to up to 54 Mbit/s using the same 2.4 GHz band as 802.11 and it is an amendment to the IEEE 802.11 specification.

The In-Stat study said that total Wi-Fi chipset revenue will pass $4 billion by 2012. It also said that shipments of Wi-Fi-enabled TVs, however, will exceed shipments of Wi-Fi-enabled set-top boxes by 2013. The report said that the industry will witness the first shipments of draft n/802.11n-enabled portable CE equipment in 2009, although there have been draft n/802.11n shipments in most markets for some time.

“802.11n chipset revenue will surpass that of 802.11g this year as a result of higher Average Selling Prices (ASPs),” said Victoria Fodale, an In-Stat analyst, in a statement. “ASPs for draft n/802.11n chipsets are complex, as there are more options that can impact prices. These options include support for the 5GHz spectrum and the number of data streams, which can range from 1 to 4.”

According to the report, in 2009 digital still/video cameras will make up the majority of the remaining of draft n/802.11n-enabled portable CE equipment shipments. In-Stat anticipates that this category will consume in excess of 20 percent of total Wi-Fi chipset in 2009.

In a recently released report, the company stated that SuperSpeed, a new USB technology, is set to fuel the market over the next several years. SuperSpeed – capable of delivering 5Gbps – is a ten-fold improvement over the High-Speed USB. It is compatible with the billions of USB enabled devices currently deployed in the market. SuperSpeed USB is based on Sync-N-Go technology that minimizes user wait-time.

An earlier In-State reported released this year found that Wi-Fi chipset sales increased 26 percent in 2008 to 387 million. The increase, TMCnet reported, was the result of strong consumer and enterprise demand for a variety of Wi-Fi-enabled devices, from smart phones to mini notebooks.
