Oulu, Finland has been chosen as the site for a fall meeting of the NFC Forum, a nonprofit industry association that advances the use of Near Field Communication technology – a standards-based, short-range wireless connectivity technology thatenables simple and safe two-way interactions between electronic devices.

 

Officials in the Finnish city call it an R&D hotspot that boasts a unique testing environment, top research institutes, a university and a separate university of applied sciences. Oulu also has on its panel a number of seasoned experts and is maintained by well-rounded support services.

 

The first-ever member city of the NFC Forum (News - Alert), Oulu will host representatives from global top technology firms who will congregate to discuss various issues such as NFC specifications, development, new business models, and innovative opportunities for implementing the short-range wireless connectivity standard.

 

Oulu has already fostered a number of NFC innovations. According to company’s sources, it was the first public sector operator in the world to test NFC technology in public service processes. While this happened back in 2005, today skilled and innovative high-tech companies and research centers have come together to form a NFC cluster in Oulu.

 

Experts from those technology hubs aim to develop new, inventive NFC applications that will address the various needs of businesses. Until now, a number of diverse applications such as contactless payment for public transportation, parking and theatre tickets have been piloted in Oulu and the NFC is now targeting mobile services for schools, daycare, and elderly people.
