Aptilo Enables MedStar Deploy Wi-Fi for Patients and Visitors

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Aptilo Networks has helped MedStar Health to deploy wireless Internet services to patients and visitors throughout its community-based network of hospitals.

MedStar Health is a non-profit regional healthcare system in Maryland and Washington, D.C. The company has deployed the Aptilo Guest Internet Services for Healthcare, an integrated, secure wireless guest Internet access solution that is designed to address the unique needs of the hospital sector.

MedStar Health has rolled out the wireless guest Internet access to Georgetown University Hospital, National Rehabilitation Hospital and Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. and to Franklin Square Hospital Center, Good Samaritan Hospital, Harbor Hospital and Union Memorial Hospital in Maryland.

Aptilo Networks (News - Alert) is a global provider of integrated management solutions for control of billing, user services and access in WiMAX and Wi-Fi networks. The Aptilo Guest Internet Services for Healthcare is a hosted solution that provides patients and visitors with secure, easy-to-use high-speed wireless Internet access.

MedStar Health personnel are also using a separate Guest Provisioning Portal to create accounts that are valid for longer periods and have a predefined start and end date. This functionality is ideally suited for long-term visitors like medical students.

Jason Guest, account manager, Aptilo Networks, explained that one common infrastructure design can allow the hospitals to increase the value of their network. This functionality allows people to share the same wireless infrastructure in a secure manner.

Aptilo’s solution ensures that patients and visitors can only access the Internet for a predefined period in a way that does not violate hospital security policies. Guest added that this solution also frees the local IT staff from spending time on tedious administrative tasks.

Catherine Szenczy, senior vice president and CIO, MedStar Health, said the Aptilo deployment has benefited patients and families throughout the MedStar network.

She believes they made the right choice in deploying Aptilo’s solutions and services, as Aptilo has the expertise and experience to manage large-scale deployments of guest Internet services to hospitals.

“This is the latest in a series of hospital deployments by Aptilo in the U.S. and Europe,” said Guest. “We are proud to be working with MedStar Health in providing carrier-class wireless Internet services to their healthcare system.”
