Alvarion to Display Seamless Handover Between Mobile WiMAX and 3G Networks

By Shireen Dee, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Alvarion, a provider of WiMAX (News - Alert) and wireless broadband services, recently announced that it will showcase a seamless handover between WiMAX and 3G networks. Alvarion will be joined by Intel during the demonstration this week at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The handover will take place at high-data rates and with multiple sessions running at the same time.

"The capability of seamless handover between WiMAX and 3G is an important milestone in the WiMAX landscape," said Sriram Viswanathan, vice president of Intel Capital (News - Alert) and general manager of WiMAX Program Office.

"This solution can manage data capacity overload on 3G networks without compromising the end-user's experience. Intel's ongoing collaboration with Alvarion (News - Alert) reinforces our commitment to the WiMAX ecosystem," he added.

The company will utilize the 2.5 GHz frequency band to conduct data downloads, stream videos and make Skype (News - Alert) calls via notebooks based on the Intel Centrino 2, which is a processor equipped with Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350. These processes will run on the company’s WiMAX Forum Certified BreezeMAX base station.

"Handover between WiMAX and 3G highlights the ability of WiMAX to serve as an overlay broadband data technology over existing radio technologies," said Tzvika Friedman, president and chief executive officer of Alvarion.

"This means mobile operators can introduce 4G services using WiMAX today to their customers. Furthermore, mobile operators will be able to deploy additional capacity at low cost with a secure path to all-IP applications over WiMAX. This unique demonstration is enabled by mutual hard work and ongoing cooperation with Intel in a strong partnership of several years," Friedman added.

3G networks are capable of supplying a large coverage at economical data service charges. WiMAX networks on the other hand are able to provide broadband speed and data rates with extensive reach.

Alvarion supplies solutions and services to approximately 250 commercial prospects in the world. The company’s solutions function on a range of frequency bands that are capable of handling many types of business cases.
