Taqua's MobileWorks Solution Brings Voice Services to WiFi Networks

By Barkha Bathwal, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Taqua, a supplier of next-generation solutions focused on small and medium sized wireline and wireless carriers, reportedly announced that its “MobileWorks” solution enables voice services over WiFi (News - Alert) networks with other IP-based or TDM services through the Taqua 7000 Class 5 Switching System.

The announcement was made at ITEXPO East 2009 in Miami and, as a result, wireline or wireless service providers will be able to extend their existing service offerings to mobile subscribers when utilizing their dual-mode WiFi phone within range of a WiFi network.

Taqua (News - Alert), established in 1998 and with more than 300 system deployments, is headquartered in Richardson, Texas, with research and development located there and in Hyannis, Massachusetts.

The company’s “MobileWorks” won a 2008 “Product of the Year” award from Internet Telephony (News - Alert) Magazine.

The Taqua 7000 Switching System is at the core of the Taqua’s award winning MobileWorks solutions set.

“Wireless convergence has been a challenge for small to medium sized carriers largely because of the capital equipment needed to deploy such services,” said Greg Galitzine (News - Alert), editorial director at Internet Telephony magazine. “The architecture of the Taqua 7000™ allows carriers to save on capital and operating expenses by combining their wireline and wireless switching and simplify back office systems such as billing. At the same time, the Taqua MobileWorks solution provides a full suite of mobility and wireline applications that help service providers differentiate their services and increase revenue per user.”

The Taqua 7000 Switching System (T7000) is a blade-based advanced end-office soft switch that offers access to a wide-array of IP and circuit-based business and residential Class 5 switch features. The system is based on patented “switch-on-a-card” design. Each interface card on the switching system performs all of the functions that are required of a Class 5, end-office switch.

According to Taqua, the standard T7000 supports a wide variety of protocols such as SS7, SIP, MGCP, GR-303, CAS, NCS, PRI and others over line, trunk or IP interfaces. It includes a mobile interface card in a gateway-like chassis, thereby offering wireline legacy, broadband and wireless (2G, 3G or 4G) subscribers with the capability to economically deliver omnipresent services. Taqua 7000. Taqua has announced that Communications Options, Inc. (COI), has purchased two Taqua 7000s to support its growing voice services in Ohio.

Scott Weidenfeller, chief marketing officer for Taqua, LLC said, “Oftentimes, especially in rural America, the reach of wireless communications can be challenged within buildings whether it’s a home or business. Most buildings today now have WiFi-enabled networks. With this new Taqua MobileWorks application, dual-mode phone subscribers can utilize any WIFI network to make and receive calls without using their mobile minutes. Service providers benefit by enabling a higher level of convenience for their subscribers, but they also benefit by increasing termination traffic through their T7000 Class 5 switching system.”
