SkyWi Announces Plan to Sell VoIP Operations to Telekenex

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributing Editor

SkyWi, Inc., New Mexico's independently owned and operated ISP offering high-speed wireless Internet services to residential, business and institutional customers, has just signed a Memorandum of Understanding to sell all its VoIP operations to California based Telekenex, Inc., a well established 15 year-old IP service provider.

Earlier in September 2008, SkyWi completed its merger with One Connect IP. The combined entity was offering Internet, VoIP and related broadband services to customers throughout the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Nevada. Though the merger was working under the SkyWi corporate brand, the service offerings was sold under the brands of SkyWi, One Connect IP and ZiaNet.

Later in December, due to a long dispute, the network of SkyWi, was shut down by Qwest (News - Alert) Communications, which affected thousands of customers without service. This conflict between SkyWi and Qwest has resulted in significant service disruptions. To sort out this, and to ensure service to its valued customers, SkyWi has initiated this current transaction with Telekenex, mentioned the company.

Telekenex manages an international private IP network that delivers state-of-the-art IP solutions to enterprises and carriers. The company’ Managed Ethernet, SIP Trunking, Private MPLS plus Internet, Managed Data Center and a full suite of IP Telephony solutions.

The dispute between Qwest and SkyWi is however on the New Mexico PRC's agenda in Santa Fe today, February 5, 2009 to describe the plan and to request the PRC's assistance in ensuring a quick and orderly transition to the Telekenex network without any additional service disruptions.

Both Telekenex and SkyWi are planning to close the deal quickly upon receiving satisfactory assurances. The companies are aiming to have a seamless transition that will enable customers with more services over a larger national footprint without any loss of current functional capabilities.

"Our only concern is through the next 30-45 day transition period that Qwest will allow for and help facilitate in good faith a timely transfer of underlying physical circuits without damaging our customers' communications connectivity," said Allen Witters, chief executive officer at SkyWi.

"SkyWi regrets exiting a business we have invested millions of dollars in, but this transaction will protect our customers," added Witters.

"It's very unfortunate that the business conflicts between Qwest and SkyWi have resulted in severe disruptions in service for thousands of people in New Mexico, Utah and Idaho, but at Telekenex we are excited about the opportunity to further expand our customer base and are prepared to commit all our resources and experience to removing all the customers from this conflict by managing a quick and seamless transition to our network," said Anthony Zabit, founder and chief operating officer at Telekenex.

SkyWi and Telekenex will soon be communicating to their customers about the transition.
