Atheros XSPAN Technology ASUS Powers Eee PC Netbooks

Asus reportedly has enhanced its Eee PC series with Atheros XSPAN 802.11n technology. The 11n throughput will now provide an improved level of wireless networking to Asus notebooks.

A proposed amendment to the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11-2007 wireless networking standard, IEEE 802.11n is expected to improve network throughput over previous standards, such as 802.11b and 802.11g.

Earlier, Asus had launched the premiere Eee PC 701 with Atheros (News - Alert) 802.11g, which were successful according to Atheros. Buoyed by this success, Asus has now opted for XSPAN 11n technology in its Eee PC S101. In fact, Eee PC S101 will be the first notebook from Asus that will feature XSPAN 802.11n technology.

The Asus Eee PC S101 is equipped with features such as Atheros’ AR9281 single-chip, single-band 1x2 MIMO-enabled PCI Express design. It also offers up to 150 Mbps in transmit mode and up to 300 Mbps PHY rates in receive mode.

“We are pleased that Atheros XSPAN single-chip technology has been selected by Asus to enhance the wireless connectivity in its advanced line of Eee PC Netbooks,” said Ben Naskar, vice president of Wireless Networking Business Unit at Atheros. “Asus is a pioneer in mobile computing design with its sleek form factors, user-friendly ergonomics and advanced features”

One of the biggest problems faced by notebooks is the battery life. The lack of prolonged battery life often takes away the mobility factor of a notebook. Atheros claims that its XSPAN technology extends Netbook battery life with its advanced power-saving techniques such as Atheros Dynamic MIMO Power Save and Unscheduled Automatic Power Save Delivery. Also, users will experience faster Wi-Fi transfers which further reduce power consumption.

Atheros claims that XSPAN is the world’s most widely adopted 802.11n technology. It allows wireless products to perform seamlessly and quickly, says Atheros.

In August, Deliberant had launched a new product lineup of wireless access points and customer premises equipment. The 2.4 GHz CPE product featured Deliberant-designed main board, loaded with features such as 500 mW transmit power, on-board Ethernet surge protection, security and management features, and is available in N-Connector and integrated antenna models.
