City of Thomasville Completes Installation of Cisco Mesh Wireless Network

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The City of Thomasville has completed the installation of Cisco Mesh Wireless network which will enable them to deploy wireless mesh network infrastructure, wireless bridging, and mobile networks. It will also allow them to have mission-critical public safety services and internet access for private citizen, local businesses and access for other municipal feeds.

With wireless mesh technology: government, public safety, and transportation organizations can build cost-effective outdoor wireless networks for private or public use. Wireless mesh solutions allows municipalities to offer innovative new ways of accelerating communications and service delivery to both employees and citizens.

"The City of Thomasville is the first Wireless Communities Georgia program participant to fully deploy its wireless network," stated Rich Calhoun, Georgia Technology Authority Program Director, on behalf of the Office of Georgia Governor, Sonny Purdue. "It has been two years since the Governor set in motion his vision for assistance to Georgia communities to spur economic development through wireless technologies."

Dial-up internet connection was first introduced in the City of Thomasville in the mid-1990s and since then the city has expanded its list of internet services to include Broadband Internet, Cable TV, Phone Services, Video Conferencing, and now Wireless Internet services to its portfolio.

With the addition of wireless internet services, officials say the city can improve ways of promoting economic development, expanding educational opportunities. It will help in improving the efficiency of their services.

Organizations can use the wireless network to install secure, high-bandwidth, scalable access to fixed and mobile applications across metropolitan areas, extending existing wired networked services and applications beyond the current physical infrastructure.

"Field reporting was a driving factor for the Police Department. The system that Digitel provided will allow officers in the field to access the wireless network, improving their productivity," said John Overley, Director of Digitel's Wireless division.

He continued, "In our partnership with Cisco (News - Alert) and Thomasville, we leveraged Thomasville's existing investment in technology, Cisco's technical resources, and cutting edge technology -- the Cisco Mobile Access Router -- to meet Thomasville's needs for public safety. The Cisco MARs are being deployed in 50 vehicles, including their Mobile Command Center."
