AT&T (News - Alert) mobile arm, Cingular Wireless, reportedly invested nearly $165 million in service upgrades and expansions during 2006 for the Georgia market, which includes portions of South Carolina, specifically Aiken, Bluffton and Hilton Head. The mobile operator said on Tuesday that this estimated amount adds up to the approximate $6 billion it invested last year in expanding its network nationwide last year.
Cingular's (News - Alert) recently added offerings in Georgia include high-speed 3G service in Atlanta, 136 new cell sites and extra network capacity across the state.
Areas which are now enjoying the operator's network expansions in the Georgia market include Augusta, Statesboro, Columbus, Camden County, Savannah, Atlanta, Florida Parkway and Northeast Georgia (between Dalton and Greenwood); and South Carolina's Aiken.
"2006 has proven to be an unprecedented year for us in Georgia," said Cliff Minor, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless operations in Georgia. "We completed a major expansion initiative and added our 3G network and that's an exceptional achievement that positions us for the future."
"And now as part of AT&T, in 2007 we will continue our momentum and focus on delivering a strong network and pleasant in-store customer experience. We are well positioned to deliver on these promises with more than 5,000 employees in the state, and more than 1,880 cell sites in Georgia," he added.
Today's news comes on the heels of AT&T announcing that Cingular Wireless subscribers who also subscribe to AT&T wireline services will now be able to carry out free calls between any other subscribers belonging to these networks. The telecom will bundle these subscribers into what the company calls "the nation's largest unlimited free calling community," dubbed the AT&T Unity Plan.
The new plan includes subscriber-to-subscriber home, business and wireless calling. AT&T Unity customers can call or receive calls for free from any AT&T wireless and wireline phone numbers nationwide without using up their wireline or wireless Anytime minutes.
