KDDI Selects LTE Network to Provide Bandwidth-intense Multimedia Content

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The second largest cellular operator in Japan, KDDI is all set to deploy a Long-Term Evolution (LTE (News - Alert)) wireless network to provide consumers with instant access to the bandwidth-intense multimedia content and applications. The LTE wireless network, which uses a core networking solution from Hitachi collaborating with Nortel (News - Alert), will provide an overlay to the already existing CDMA mobile network of KDDI.

LTE enables fixed to mobile migrations of internet applications like VoIP, video streaming, music downloading and mobile TV. The LTE networks also have the capacity to support high demand for connectivity from a new generation of consumer devices.

Since LTE will provide greater spectral efficiency than most 3G networks, the cost per bit is reduced and the operators are provided with affordable mass market wireless broadband services.

As part of its ‘Challenge 2010’ initiative, KDDI (News - Alert) is striving for high levels of customer service, reliability and service differentiation. The LTE network deployment will help reduce download times for music and video services.  Access to bandwidth-intense applications like video, real-time mobile games etc. will be provided from any location at any time. The network will also help to reduce costs and ensure seamless interoperability with the current 3G CDMA network.

The tender award of LTE core network from KDDI will also include the deployment of a new Evolved Packet Core (EPC) from Hitachi (News - Alert) as well as an evolution to the existing operation, management and provisioning system.  The EPC features the new ATCA-based Access Gateway from Nortel as a Mobility Management Entity (MME).

It is the experience, expertise in delivering differentiated solutions and time to market advantage that led to Hitachi and Nortel being selected by KDDI. Nortel has been a leader in high-speed mobility handover and in LTE interworking with CDMA. Nortel also provides an open standards approach and proof of true multi-vendor compatibility.

Hitachi has been supplying KDDI with high-quality, high-performance products and solutions over the years. Thus the experience of Nortel and the proven track record of core network supplier Hitachi have provided KDDI with the ideal team to drive its network to the next level.

According to Richard Lowe, the President of Carrier Networks at Nortel, “With the deployment of the LTE network, KDDI's customers nationwide will enjoy real-time high-bandwidth content and the enhanced quality of experience that a true broadband service delivers with the freedom of mobility.”
