Boingo Adds 950 Wi-Fi Hotspots to Its Roaming Network

By Jayashree Adkoli, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Boingo Wireless, a U.S.-based provider of Wi-Fi connections, announced that it has added nearly 950 Wi-Fi hotspots to the Boingo Roaming Network with the support of eircom, a provider of fixed-line telecommunications services in Ireland. With this, Boingo members can now experience broadband connections in business and leisure hotspots, such as airports, train stations, hotels and pubs all across Ireland.

Boingo offers business and travelers Wi-Fi hotspots by combining more than 100,000 locations from 150 Wi-Fi operators into a single worldwide network that is spanning 90 countries. With hundreds of Wi-Fi network operators around the world, Boingo signs agreements with network operators and facilitates its customers to log on to all of those networks with a single Boingo account.

A Boingo registered user will have to install one of the company’s software products known as GoBoingo, which will help them connect to any of the 100,000 Boingo hotspots. Once a user does this, they will gain affordable Wi-Fi access on their laptop or mobile device wherever possible.

GoBoingo is Boingo’s free Wi-Fi client software that recognizes more than 660 network names as Boingo-accessible hotspots. It also stores a user’s name and password to simplify identifying and connecting to commercial Wi-Fi networks.

eircom’s new hotspots added to Boingo’s network in Ireland include airports located in Dublin, Donegal, Farranfore, Knock and Waterford, top train stations, more than 200 hotels, and 350 popular restaurants, and cafés such as Insomnia and McDonald’s.

“With the addition of eircom’s hotspots to Boingo’s network, Boingo users will be able to access the largest network in Ireland, a country that has become a key European business hub,” said Luis Serrano, vice president of network strategy for Boingo Wireless (News - Alert). “The quality of the network is critical for our customers and eircom provides the kind of tier-one service excellence that we strive to offer throughout our entire footprint.”

Alan Brown, director of broadband and Internet, eircom, said “As the largest telecommunications operator in Ireland, eircom is committed to bringing the highest quality wireless Internet to its customers and partners. With Boingo, people coming to Ireland will be able to conveniently logon and get high-speed, reliable Internet access no matter where they are, be it airports, train stations, pubs or even Croke Park, the largest stadium in Ireland.”

eircom is a broadband service provider in Ireland and claims to have more than 600,000 broadband customers on its network. It offers a comprehensive range of advanced voice, data and internet services to the residential, business and enterprise markets.
