CTIA Teams-up with NCMEC to Fight Child Pornography

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) has joined hands with CTIA–The Wireless Association to prevent child pornography from circulating in wireless networks.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), the International Center for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC) and other international sources state that child pornography is a multi-billion dollar industry. It is also among the fastest growing criminal segments on the Internet, the sources say.

To keep this heinous crime off the wireless networks, both NCMEC and CTIA (News - Alert) have created the Wireless Child Safety Task Force which strives to keep wireless devices and services free of child pornography. As a first step in this direction, wireless companies will block the web sites that are believed to have child pornography in them.

“The wireless industry will work diligently to keep this illegal content off its networks,” said CTIA President and CEO Steve Largent (News - Alert). “We are proud to partner with the nation’s leading child-protection organization in this fight against an insidious criminal activity and enterprise.”

Furthermore, CTIA will use its expertise to identify the child porn web sites and initiate possible legal action against them. The wireless industry will expand its existing partnership with NCMEC through the efforts of the Task Force.

Prevention is better than the cure. CTIA will also try to educate the parents and children about the safe browsing habits in the internet with its Wireless Child Safety Task Force. CTIA believes that children should have a safe environment online and the organization says its Wireless Child Safety Task Force is committed to see this happening.

This is not the first time CTIA is fighting for a social cause. In September of this year, the Association stated that it supports the Federal Communications Commission's strict safety guidelines that apply to all wireless devices that are sold or marketed in the U.S. This statement was issued prior to the House Domestic Policy Subcommittee Hearing into wireless phones and health effects on September 25, 2008.
