Well at least there are some angles singing in heaven. With certain markets and companies hitting the pavement, or close to it—Wi-Fi can say that they are having a fairy tale ending amid the turmoil. The trend for Wi-Fi over the last several years has been the increasingly growing chipsets from just over $1 billion in 2006, to just over $2 billion in 2007, it is now expected to deliver revenue of nearly $3 billion in 2008.
According to ABI Research ( News - Alert) principal analyst Philip Solis, “We expect more than 1 billion chipsets to ship during 2011 alone, while the 2013 opportunity will be more than 1.6 billion units.”
In terms of devices this push is mainly driven by cellular handsets, consumer electronics, laptops, netbooks and MIDs. Much of the growth will be in n (802.11n chips). n is being built into access points and laptops, and will frequently use a variant not including MIMO connectivity, to preserve most of 802.11n’s benefits but at a lower cost and size.
