Ruckus Provides Wi-Fi to 14 School Districts

By Anuradha Shukla, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Ruckus Wireless has been chosen by 14 school districts across the nation to supply Smart wireless LAN (WLAN) systems based on the emerging 802.11n high-speed wireless standard.

The company has also announced its “Smarter Wi-Fi for Education” matching donation program that runs through the end of the year. Under this program, the company is offering schools one free ZoneFlex 802.11n access point for each one purchased. The school must order a minimum of 20 ZoneFlex 7942s along with the requisite ZoneDirector WLAN controllers, said the company.

Emphasizing the importance of reliable and higher speed Wi-Fi within the education market, Mary Phillips, director of technology at SCUSD, explained that this fluid environment demands consistent connectivity. The school district thus wanted a flexible unified wireless infrastructure that didn't lock them into any particular architecture.

According to Ruckus officials, their ZoneFlex 802.11n system is ideal for affordable next- generation WLAN deployments thanks to its unique capabilities such as Smart Mesh networking that enables school districts to extend and provide Wi-Fi connectivity to areas where Ethernet cabling doesn't exist.

The ZoneFlex 802.11n system also boasts a smart antenna and adaptive RF routing technology that provides long-range signals that are automatically steered around interference and obstacles. Because the system offers flexible deployment options, school districts can deploy APs in standalone mode, lightweight mode or meshed. All of these can be managed as a unified WLAN system, explained the officials.

By leveraging the advanced remote WLAN management, school districts enjoy complete visibility into and control over discrete school WLANs and access points (meshed and non-mesh) over any IP infrastructure.

Ruckus Wireless’ (News - Alert) ZoneFlex 802.11n system also has a distributed forwarding architecture. This allows remote APs to be managed by a centralized controller at the district office over a high- speed Ethernet WAN.

The 14 school districts that have chosen Ruckus are: Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD), Schenectady Public Schools, Tonasket School District, Holland Christian Public Schools, Hamilton/Benchmark School, Eaton (News - Alert) County Schools, Littletown High School, Pittsylvania County Public Schools, Stuttgart Public School District, Arkansas City Public Schools, Putnam Country Schools, St. Clair Country Regional Educational Service Agency, Copper Country Independent School District and Knox County School District.

Ruckus Wireless’ ZoneFlex Smart Wireless LAN (WLAN) system recently became compliant with key Internet protocol (IP) telephony solutions from Avaya, a global provider of business communications applications, systems and services.
