For less than 11 bucks a day now Avis car renters will be able to surf the net from the road—not while they are driving we hope! The added benefit will be available thanks to a partnership (reported today by The New York Times) between the rental car giant and newcomer wireless technology manufacturer Autonet Mobile.
According to the report, if renters choose to add the service to their rented car, they will receive a small, in-car router, which plugs into the car's power supply.
Judging by Autonet's coverage area's map, the company's 3G network has the country's metro areas vastly covered.
Autonet officially launched the Wireless Broadband Mobile Network, its wireless service, during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today. The service is based on the company's TRU Technology, which enables "seamless Internet connectivity" so that passengers stay connected while driving.
The Autonet Mobile Unit will retail for $399 with a monthly service charge of $49.
"We live in a car centric society and our Autonet Mobile Service is directly addressing the communications needs of today's drivers and passengers," noted Autonet's CEO Sterling Pratz in a statement. "Today, 40 percent of all SUVs and station wagons come equipped with media centers, supporting music and DVD's, yet, do not support today's connected lifestyle of the Internet, e-mail and social media. We are putting the connected lifestyle in the car with an easy to use service for executives and families on the go."
Be sure to check out TMCnet’s Whitepaper Library, which provides a selection of in-depth information on WiFi and other relevant topics affecting the IP Communications industry. The library offers white papers, case studies and other documents which are free to registered users.
