Broadcom's Gateway Solution Enables Telecom Networks

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Broadcom Corporation (News - Alert), a provider of semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, has announced a new generation of xDSL customer premises equipment (CPE) system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions that support the VDSL2 protocol, with seamless ADSL2+ fallback.

Catering to all aspects of sophisticated digital subscriber line (DSL)-based services, this single-chip multimode residential gateway solution brings unparalleled, standards-based silicon and software to the industry. This includes Wi-Fi, voice over IP (VoIP), Ethernet switching and IPTV (News - Alert).

Also, enabling modem manufacturers and carriers to deploy high-performance, future-proofed CPE solutions that support ADSL2+ or VDSL2, Broadcom has announced its single-chip BCM6368 multimode residential gateway.

Along with VDSL2 central office (CO) equipment based on Broadcom silicon, this gateway has recently been selected by Chunghwa Telecom (News - Alert) (CHT) of Taiwan for mass deployment in its next generation IP services network. This is done in conjunction with ZyXEL Corporation's ZyXEL VES-1600 series and IES-5005 series next-generation access products. The single-chip BCM6368 multimode residential gateway is now sampling to early access customers.

Using the software and system efforts of the prior Broadcom and ZyXEL solutions, this is the second consecutive VDSL2 CO and CPE win at CHT. Broadcom and ZyXEL have teamed together again to provide VDSL2 IP DSLAM and CPE products to Chunghwa Telecom for its next-generation VDSL2 access network. To develop standards-based solutions for Ethernet aggregation, ITU G.992.1/3/5 ADSL1/2/2+ and ITU G.993.2 VDSL2 access markets, this selection by CHT provides further market validation of Broadcom and ZyXEL's VDSL2 products and the ongoing collaboration between Broadcom and ZyXEL.

The new solution features PhyR; the company's newly released impulse noise protection technology, multi-port Ethernet switching for video over DSL services, non-blocking 802.11n and multi-line VoIP capabilities. With hardware-assisted wirespeed bridging and routing, this integrated access device (IAD) solution incorporates a high performance MIPS-based applications processor. The BCM6368 facilitates carriers to deploy products in an ADSL2+ capacity and then remotely upgrade them to VDSL2 as their infrastructures allow with the help of ADSL2+ fallback capability.

“Winning CHT's VDSL2 tender for a second consecutive year is an unprecedented endorsement for Broadcom's BCM6368 multi-mode residential gateway solution,” said Greg Fischer, vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Carrier Access (News - Alert) line of business. “Achieving the best VDSL2 product rating by Chunghwa Telecom bodes well for the future market success of the BCM6368 as both ZyXEL and Broadcom will leverage this success into new xDSL opportunities around the world.”
