Toshiba and MOD Partner for Digital Media Downloads Through SD Cards

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Toshiba (News - Alert) Corporation has announced that it plans to make an equity investment in MOD Systems Incorporated, a U.S-based company providing digital content delivery systems to the retail sector.

With the investment, Toshiba proposes to add $20 million to the already invested amount of $4 million -- taking Toshiba’s total investment in MOD to $24 million.

MOD’s digital media delivery system enables consumers to download digital content for burning to an optical format. Next year MOD will be expanding its present music download system with a new system. This allows direct downloads of mostly entertainment content like movies and TV drama series to the retail sector.

Consumers will be able to download the content using SD cards, which is a popular solid-state media card for viewing the content later at home.

MOD Systems has said it is looking for partnerships with other potential companies like studios, content providers, hardware manufacturers and retailers.

Toshiba foresees an increase in demand for purchasing digital entertainment owing to the rapid growth of Internet-based delivery of music and video content to the home itself.

Video content is distributed via optical discs at present.

A good business model necessitates a technology which will provide copyright protection and ensures secure delivery. Direct download at retail locations seems to be the best solution as video entertainment can be easily accessed by consumers with security and quality when downloaded at high speeds to an SD card.

Toshiba will be developing dedicated set-top boxes for this service enabling consumers to watch content on TVs. It will also develop portable devices in which content can be viewed and enjoyed anywhere. Toshiba will produce and market high capacity SD cards suitable for the system. All these provisions will promote expansion of MOD Systems’ digital media delivery service.

NCR Corporation, another investor in MOD, will also be deploying kiosks and other self-service devices which will allow download to SD cards in retail stores.
