FON WiFi Community Tops One Million Members

FON, a global WiFi (News - Alert) community with a mission to stimulate the growth of this technology around the world, announced that more than one million members have joined it so far, which makes FON (News - Alert) the largest WiFi Community in the world till now.



 
Anybody with a broadband subscription can join FON simply by purchasing a FON router. The community members can use the FON router to share their Internet connection securely with the Community and roam on all FON WiFi Hotspots for free in return. The community has a worldwide appearance in over 150 countries has maintained a number of high-profile co-operations with top partners, which have helped it reach these high numbers in a fast pace.
 
Various known telecommunication companies around the globe have teamed up with FON to spread the WiFi movement, comprising of British Telecom in the United Kingdom, Neuf Cegetel (News - Alert) in France, Comstar in Russia, and ZON in Portugal.
 
The broadband subscribers of these telecommunication companies have to simply activate the FON sharing functionality on their home ISP WiFi Box in order to become a part of the FON movement.
 
FON has leveraged upon this viral growth and partnerships to establish over 400.000 FON WiFi Hotspots throughout the world, and the milestone of one million FON subscribers marks the huge interest in WiFi sharing within internet users all over the world.
 
The one millionth member who has joined FON is from Japan, who is reportedly feeling extremely honored to be the memorable one millionth to register as a FON member.
 
FON has recently announced partnerships with Sony PSP and Sony Mylo in Japan regarding WiFi collaboration, as Japan is a very important and fast growing market for FON currently.
 
Martin Varsavsky, founder and chief executive officer of FON commented that when the company started less than three years ago, some people were skeptical about the future of WiFi and the concept of sharing, but now everybody talks about WiFi and uses it.
 
Varsavsky added that even Apple’s 3G iPhone (News - Alert) lets the users download from iTunes via WiFi, and noted that the best wireless proposition is one in which light applications are used over 3G and heavy apps such as music, TV, videos, movies, games, etc. communicate over WiFi.
