Deviscape Adds Cisco Support to WiFi Technology

By Nathesh, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Newly released WiFi (News - Alert) technology from Deviscape Software features support for Cisco Compatible Extensions, version 5. This certification indicates a high level of device security and interoperability with the Cisco (News - Alert) Unified Wireless Network for business mobility applications.

Deviscape Software is privately held and backed by venture capital companies including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, August Capital, Enterprise Partners, and JAFCO. The company is also a provider of the Cisco standard for mobile devices with its Devicescape Agent with Cisco Compatible Extensions, a WiFi supplicant that is already deployed in hundreds of enterprise devices.

"Cisco Compatible Extensions is a requirement for device manufacturers wishing to sell into today's enterprise markets," said Dave Fraser, CEO of Devicescape, in a statement. "Devicescape provides our customers with the latest standards in security and manageability. And with the Cisco certification, Devicescape customers can be assured that their devices are compatible and interoperable in all their target markets."

Cisco Compatible Extensions V5 is a key component of the Devicescape Agent toolset, the wireless software (supplicant) that allows connecting a device to a WiFi network. The Devicescape Agent solution provides an additional layer of features to the elements of Cisco Compatible Extensions Version 4, including diagnostic and troubleshooting support, statistics gathering, management frame protection and improved performance.

The Compatible Extensions program was started by Cisco to help its partners effortlessly connect and retain the integrity of the enterprise security of a Cisco Unified Wireless Network. And according to Cisco officials, the Cisco Compatible Extensions Version 5 is upgraded with abilities to allow manufacturers to embed technologies that enterprise customers demand and desire.

Cisco officials also assert that the security and troubleshooting enhancements in Cisco Compatible Extensions offer enterprises the confidence that wireless is secure and easy to manage.

Deviscape says that their supplicant must be used in tandem with a Wi-Fi chipset and driver enabled with Cisco Compatible Extensions to meet certification requirements. Previous versions of the Devicescape Agent with Cisco Compatible Extensions have shipped in devices from Research in Motion (News - Alert), HP, Fujitsu, Honeywell and others.

The Devicescape Agent support for Cisco Compatible Extensions V5 became available in May.
