Sprint announced a partnership to expand the availability of wireless coverage, using femtocells from Samsung ( News - Alert). This will be achieved with the upcoming launch of Sprint’s AIRAVE voice plan, designed to provide improved wireless coverage in homes and offices.
The AIRAVE service will allow Sprint ( News - Alert) customers to use their existing phones, with an option to upgrade at any time. Calls initiated using an AIRAVE femtocell will transfer automatically to the Nationwide Sprint Network when customers move outside the AIRWAVE coverage area.
AIRAVE service will include an optional, unlimited option for incoming and outdoing calls, and for nationwide long distance. The femtocell device is designed for easy installation by customers, using their existing broadband Internet connection and an AC power outlet. The AIRAVE is ready to use out of the box.
By creating a licensed spectrum CDMA network within the customer’s home or small office, the Sprint AIRAVE acts like a mini cell tower. The result is an improved wireless coverage with range of up to 5,000 square feet. The AIRAVE is designed to offer more reliable performance, less interference, and is compatible with all Sprint phones. (Nextel phones are not compatible with the AIRAVE.)
AIRAVE will be sold at Sprint stores across the country for $99.99 (taxes excluded), starting August 17.
“Customers are using their wireless phones at home more than ever, and with the AIRAVE, Sprint is making it even more convenient for customers to rely on their Sprint phones while in their home or office,” said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president of product and technology development for Sprint, in a statement. “For customers who want to reduce their monthly communication expenses by using their wireless phone as their only phone, the AIRAVE offers enhanced coverage that works with all Sprint phones, plus the option of a low cost and worry-free unlimited in-home calling plan.”
