Wireless Connectivity Technology Passes Early Adopter Phase

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A report on WTRS Wireless Connectivity Technology Trends has analyzed the market growth and adoption, volume and pricing forecasts, and standard body activities apparent for WiFi, Bluetooth, UWB and other related technologies. The activities tracked include those performed by the WiMedia Alliance (News - Alert), Bluetooth SIG, WiFi Alliance, and WirelessHD.

The latest report examines the market potential, efficacy of existing technologies and components, global and regional market trends/forecasts, regulatory issues, progress of de facto standards development, regional economic effects, and strategic developments by market makers. The report evaluates in detail emerging wireless connectivity technologies, such as applications of Bluetooth, millimeter wave wireless, UWB, and IEEE (News - Alert) 802.11n.

"All too often standards groups formed around newly-developed wireless protocols adopt the task of identifying new applications and markets in addition to codifying a standard," stated Dr Kirsten West, principal analyst of WTRS. “This approach invariably leads to standards groups competing for newly-identified large potential target applications. Wireless connectivity standards today are shifting from being in competition with one another to coexistence that signals the start of real and significant market adoption for products utilizing wireless connectivity technology."

With wireless connectivity, wireless technologies can be utilized as the underlying platform for deploying data and multimedia content networks over distances restricted to 30 meters. Examples of wireless connectivity technologies and protocols are applications of Bluetooth, UWB (including DS-UWB from GiT and others, CW-UWB from PulseLink, and MB-OFDM UWB from the WiMedia Alliance), millimeter wave wireless from SiBeam, the IEEE 802.11 family, and IEEE 802.11n.

The WTRS Wireless Connectivity Technology Trends Report findings cover the following topics:
(1) How do the Certified Wireless USB I/F, WiMedia Alliance, Bluetooth SiG, WiFi Alliance (News - Alert), and WirelessHD compare with each other?
(2) What is the analysis of wireless connectivity use cases by technology?
(3) Why are the wireless connectivity standards shifting from antagonistic to coexistence strategies?
(4) How does the addition and integration of WiFi to Bluetooth enable WiFi to penetrate the mobile phone market more strongly?
(5) Who are the Certified Wireless USB radio chipset companies that are capable of addressing the global market’s regulatory requirements?

The results stem from discussions with executive management in major corporations in the marketplace, as well as through the use of WTRS proprietary macroeconomic research tools. Purchasing any of the reports gives the customer one hour of consultation time with a senior analyst in the field.
