Intermec Unveils New Windows Mobile-Based CK61ex Handheld Computer

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Intermec (News - Alert) recently unveiled their new handheld computer, which is based upon Windows Mobile. The CK61ex is an extremely sturdy mobile computer which has incorporated within it, near-far EX imaging technology. This technology allows users to rapidly scan 1D and 2D barcodes, regardless of the orientation, from a fair distance. The user can be anywhere from six inches to 50 feet away from the barcodes themselves.

The imaging technology can also be used to capture images, signatures and documents using less expensive paper labels for long-distance scans. The potentials for this technology can be truly appreciated in a warehouse environment, where efficiency will be improved and more application opportunities will arise. The functionality turns data capture problems that exist in a warehouse, for example, high shelves, multiple barcode formats, damaged labels, and dark corners, into negligible factors, as altogether new levels of efficiency are achieved.

The new device, the CK61ex, has the most features and is the sturdiest item in the Intermec EX imaging technology product lineup. The device also incorporates the most universally used embedded operating system, which happens to include Windows Mobile 5.0. Additionally, the handheld device also includes the option of Terminal Emulation support to integrate with legacy warehouse management systems that may already be present.

The CK61ex also facilitates growing customer interest a-band radio frequencies, additionally offering support for the 802.11a/b/g radio. It contains 128MB RAM and has a substantial 192MB storage to enable numerous and larger applications, with their associated data requirements, to be installed on the device. It also has support for voice applications. The CK61ex also provides non-incendive options (UL Class I, II, III, Div 2), and in the course of the coming year the product will provide mobile RFID read/write capability through an optional snap-on RFID handle - the recently launched IP30. Its combination of features and capabilities cannot be matched by any product currently on the market.

"The CK61ex with integrated EX imaging technology really 'does it all' so that companies can run their warehouse without compromise," said Chris Kelley, Director of RFID and Data Capture Marketing for Intermec. "The broad feature set meets today's needs, and also readies an organization for tomorrow's changes and opportunities, including the growing prevalence of 2D bar codes in warehouse and distribution systems across industries."

The CK61ex joins other previously successful EX imaging-enabled products, like CK31ex and SR61ex, for example, which were launched in 2007. "We've seen our customers rapidly and enthusiastically adopt the EX product set, finding they can incorporate things like 2D or take advantage of high shelves and improve productivity," said Chris Meyer, president of The SMS Group. "With the CK61ex, market adoption will only increase, and we're excited to help our customers improve operations and leverage a technology that will be delivering value for them over the long term."
