Alvarion Leading the WiMAX Charge

By Erik Linask, Associate Editor,

With several wireless solutions looking to make the grade as the next generation solution of choice, every step, small or large, could be pivotal. Each decision could turn into the one that seals the deal—one way or the other.

Having launched its WiMAX-ready BreezeMAX platform two years ago, wireless solutions provider Alvarion, which also is a charter board member of the WiMAX Forum, took on a prominent role in the development of the technology and positioned itself to make a case for WiMAX as the global wireless standard of the future.

Certainly Sprint’s decision to make WiMAX its 4G platform of choice is a boon for the technology as a whole.

Alvarion has now announced that WiMAX Telecom AG, the first pan-European WiMAX carrier, has again selected its BreezeMAX 3500 as it expands its WiMAX networks in Austria and Slovakia.

WiMAX Telecom received its nationwide 3.5 GHz license last year and began building out its wireless network with BreezeMax. Now, as it grows that network, the carrier says it intends on deploying upwards of 10,000 additional BreezeMAX PRO CPEs by year’s end.

BreezeMAX is Alvarion’s WiMAX platform designed to IEEE 802.16 specifications and uses OFDM technology for advanced non-line-of-sight (NLOS) capability.  Its carrier-class design supports broadband speeds and quality of service (QoS), which, in turn, enables carriers to introduce triple play services to their subscriber base.

Since 2004, BreezeMAX has been successfully deployed in more than 80 countries.

“Expanding our networks using Alvarion’s WiMAX systems makes good business sense for us,” said Dov Bar-Gera, chairman of WiMAX Telecom AG. “Last year, we selected BreezeMAX because it met our extensive requirements and rigid evaluation as a robust system to handle our sometimes inclement local weather, conditions in the landscapes of Austria and Slovakia.

Bar-Gera added: “Building on our initial success, we look forward to additional rollouts of WiMAX services in other regions where we hold 3.5GHz licenses.”

To Bar-Gera’s point, the Alvarion system has been designed to and is robust enough to operate consistently in adverse conditions and non-line of sight territories.  Furthermore, its high-power radios allow for the use of indoor self-install CPEs in both urban and rural environments.

BreezeMAX CPEs are powered by Intel’s (News - Alert) PRO/Wireless 5116 broadband interface chip and deliver broadband access services to a wide range of customers, including residential, SOHO, SME, large enterprise, and multi-tenant customers.

“WiMAX Telecom is part of a new breed of ‘innovative challenger’ carriers who are leveraging the advanced technological and economic benefits of WiMAX to build broadband networks quickly and cost effectively,” commented Tzvika Friedman, president and CEO of Alvarion.

Friedman continued: “We are pleased with their success using BreezeMAX to offer broadband data and toll quality voice services to their subscribers. Our continuing innovation and leadership in WiMAX worldwide, coupled with the network building activities of forward thinking carriers such as WiMAX Telecom, means that the mass availability of broadband services and personal broadband services is fast approaching.”

As it steers the WiMAX revolution, Alvarion has extensive global deployments and a proven product portfolio enabling the delivery of commercial and residential broadband access, corporate VPNs, toll quality telephony, mobile base station feeding, hotspot coverage extension, community interconnection, public safety communications, and mobile voice and data.

Alvarion works with a global community of OEMs and more than 200 partners in an effort to appropriately support its geographically dispersed customer base and extend its WiMAX solution to new areas.
