Sequans communications announced that it would be leading a WiMAX development project which was established and begun this month by the European Commission.

Sequans will be spearheading the project to enable a new air interface for the next generation WiMAX system besides other developments said the company in a press release.

The new project, which would be funded by the European Commission, was established in order to provide significant assistance to the IEEE 802.16m task group which would develop technical specifications for next generation WiMAX (News - Alert) systems.

The European Commission has been instrumental in establishing this WiMAX project under the 7th framework Program for Research. The project has been named WiMAGIC which stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Broadband Access System for Next Generation Wireless Communications.

The Sequans project team includes 12 partners including 6 technology companies and six universities from the countries of France, United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Greece and Turkey according to the press release.

The WiMAX2 would be designed to be backwards compatible with current Mobile WiMAX systems based on the IEEE (News - Alert) 802.16e-2005 standard besides offering optimum performance.

The WiMAGIC project would encompass physical layer (PHY) functions like MIMO (Multiple In/ Multiple Out) advanced antenna technologies and high performance synchronization besides channel estimation techniques for high vehicular mobility and media access control layer (MAC) functions.

The MAC functions include adaptive radio resource management and cross-layer optimization. After development of the basic algorithms by the project it would be validated by a system-level simulator before being prototyped said Sequans.

Commenting on the futuristic project, Hikmet Sari, chief scientist at Sequans said, “The WiMAGIC project will yield significant technological advancements in terms of network capacity, throughput, and mobility. WiMAX is one of the most important technologies of our day, providing truly mobile broadband services on a global basis, and we expect WiMAX2 will be established as the leading 4G technology.”

Hikmet Sari is a well known scientist in the WiMAX field and is a forerunner in the development of OFDMA (orthogonal frequency division multiple access) a central 4G/WiMAX technology. He holds several WiMAX related patents. Under such forward-looking guidance the WiMAGIC project would be completed within three years said Sequans in the press release.
