Kyocera's iBurst Mobile Broadband Network Established in Kuala Lumpur

By Prabhala Ranga Sai, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Malaysian wireless broadband operator iZZinet has become the first iBurst operator in the ASEAN region. It delivers high-speed wireless Internet service to Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, and the surrounding metropolitan Klang Valley by installing a network of 50 iBurst base stations, said its president Makoto Kawamura.

Kyocera (News - Alert) Corporation‘s iBurst wireless broadband solution is based on HC-SDMA and it has been commercialized in more than 10 countries since 2004, including Australia, South Africa, Republic of Azerbaijan, Lebanon, Norway, Ghana, Kenya, USA, Canada, Tanzania and Malaysia. By early 2008, iBurst technology will upgrade downlink speed from 1 Mbps to 2 Mbps.

Since October, iZZinet has been offering iBurst wireless broadband communication services to an area covering approximately 80 percent of the metro Klang Valley, home to about 4.5 million people.

As a result, iZZinet has become the second largest iBurst operator in the world after South Africa’s Wireless Business Solutions, which has built a network of 215 base stations since 2004.

iZZinet‘s plans further expansion by the end of December in Klang Valley by adding another 70 iBurst base stations. It also plans 20 base stations in Kuching by early 2008; 10 base stations in Johore Baru by mid 2008; and 10 base stations in Penang around the same time period.

Once these expansion plans are completed, in two years, iZZinet can deliver Malaysia the best wireless broadband technology, with the most stable, most reliable network infrastructure, at affordable prices and with true mobility.

iBurst operators worldwide have formed the iBurst Association (iBA), a not-for-profit enterprise advocating the promotion and development of iBurst technology as the preferred solution for mobile broadband wireless access (MBWA). Its secretariat is based in Penang.
